Case Study.

Brief

As one of the industry’s most dynamic and innovative manufacturers of aluminium, Tomago Aluminium Corporation is a leader within the AsiaPac region. Based in the Hunter Region of NSW, Tomago Aluminium contributes $2.2 billion annually to the Australian economy, producing 590,000 tonnes of aluminium every year. The company employs over 1000+ staff (full-time equivalent) and 200 contractors who are transforming the business for a sustainable future.

In 2023, Tomago engaged GWG Recruitment to manage the end-to-end recruitment process for a Chief Executive Officer. Working directly with the CEO and Board, we commenced work on the role in September 2023, with an 8-week recruitment engagement period. The CEO was expected to bring extensive experience in risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and a deep understanding of metals manufacturing and the energy sector.

The Challenge

  • Briefing: Met with Tomago stakeholders, including the Board chair and NED, to understand the position and map the approach.
  • Assessment Criteria: Identified essential requirements and determined capability and suitability criteria, including complimentary skills and experience. Agreed on pre-employment assessments.
  • Market Mapping: Identified industries, companies, and individuals within our networks and globally to be approached about the position.
  • Applicant Pack: Developed an executive applicant pack detailing the role, Tomago’s structure, operational environment, values, and lifestyle benefits of the Hunter region.
  • Candidate Sourcing: Leveraged networks, online job boards, industry-specific platforms, and targeted headhunting. Created a recruitment marketing campaign across social media.
  • Screening and Assessment: Conducted in-depth interviews and assessments to evaluate qualifications, cultural fit, and strategic mindset, focusing on operational excellence, energy transition, and leadership.
  • Client Interviews: Presented four exceptional shortlisted candidates to Tomago. Coordinated interviews, provided feedback, and facilitated follow-up discussions.
  • Reference Checks and Due Diligence: Conducted thorough reference checks, including psychometric testing, to validate qualifications and professional backgrounds.
  • Offer Negotiation and Onboarding: Assisted in salary negotiation and supported the onboarding process for a smooth transition for the new CEO.

Throughout the process, we provided weekly progress updates, and regular communication with key stakeholders including the Board and Executive team to ensure the process was smooth and effective.

The Outcome

Two of the four shortlisted candidates were successful in progressing through all interview stages. The Board determined that both candidates were highly suitable for the role, demonstrating our ability to understand and meet a specific brief. The preferred candidate was based in the US and was bound by an extended notice period. Given this, we worked with Tomago to appoint the runner-up in an interim CEO role for 6 months to ensure a smooth transition. The successful candidate has now relocated and commenced in the role, as of June 2024.
