Most wanted civil engineering skills in Newcastle right now
Here’s a list of the most in demand civil engineering jobs in Newcastle this year, the salary expectations and the skills you need to be considered for these roles. If you work in the construction or building sector you can also check out my recent post on Newcastle’s hottest construction roles for 2017.
Project managers and engineers
Role summary:
Project managers (PM’s and PE’s) coordinate and oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of a project in both an onsite and administrative capacity.
Skills in demand:
PMs with previous civil engineering experience managing large road, rail, bridges, stormwater, and earthworks projects are currently in high demand in Newcastle. The Singleton Bypass, Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange and the light rail and interchange in Newcastle’s CBD and West End, are just some of the major projects organisations are gearing up for.
Employers want strong leaders and expert communicators to ensure the smooth delivery of the project. Whilst on-site and administration experience is critical, a strong commitment to maintaining safety and quality compliance is important.
But along with managerial skills they also want people with previous experience, related to the project. Some of the most sort after skills include large scale bulk earth and building works, concrete structures, logistics and installations or highway experience.
Salary expectations: $120-180K
Experience: employers are seeking PM’s and PE’s with a minimum of 1 – 15 years’ experience, depending on the project.
Education: Bachelor of Civil Engineering or similar
12D Designers
Role summary:
12D designers use auto cad to develop designs and modelling of civil engineering projects in the concept and feasibility stage.
Skills in demand:
Civil designers are as rare as hen’s teeth at the moment, especially professionals with strong technical acumen. Employers are seeking designers with road and highways, ports, dredging and land development experience.
An understanding of design standards is critical, coupled with an advanced working knowledge of 12D. If you’re a civil engineer grad its worth considering civil design as a career option. There’s plenty of opportunities in this space and, if you wish, you can move onto a site based role once you’ve built your reputation and experience.
If you’re a career civil designer, you should look at developing leadership skills – senior civil designers with experience managing a team of design and drafters are paid well and are in strong demand for more complex projects.
Salary expectations: $80 – 120K
Experience: employers are seeking 12D designers with a minimum of 1 – 10 years’ experience, depending on the project.
Education: Bachelor of Civil Engineering or similar
Site managers and supervisors
Role summary:
Responsible to oversee day-to-day site operations, to ensure civil infrastructure projects and civil works are completed safety, on time and within budget.
Skills in demand:
Site supervisors are needed in Newcastle, the Hunter and across NSW to deliver large civil infrastructure projects especially for roads, bridges and stormwater works.
Seasoned site supervisors can seek higher salaries if they have experience overseeing concreate works and machine operation. If you’re interviewing for senior role, employers will expect you have experience with successfully managing the delicate area of client expectations – so think about how you pitch this to a prospective employer.
If you’re looking to move into a site supervisor position now is the time as there’s lots of opportunities. You will need to gain experience managing a larger team and sub-contractors to be considered for most roles.
Salary expectations: $100 – 150K
Experience: employers are seeking site supervisors with a minimum of 5 years’ + experience, depending on the project.
Education: Diploma or onsite experience
