5 reasons to start contracting
So, you want to work on exciting projects, diversify your experience and be well paid? Then contracting could be for you…. Here’s a few reasons why you could consider a contract role for your next career move.
1. You can earn more!
Although contracting may mean a shorter-term position there are many benefits to becoming a paid-by-the-hour worker including higher pay.
Given the specialist nature of most contract roles companies are willing to pay you more for your unique skill set and unlike most jobs these days you can be paid for additional hours you work.
A big plus is most banks will now lend money to people in contract positions so you can still buy a house.
2. Demand for contractors is growing fast
As more businesses look to create dynamic and specialist workforces we’re seeing a big increase in demand for contractors.
Once seen mainly in IT and construction, there’s now a great deal of variety in contract roles on offer, from multi-year opportunities to shorter term positions. Growth has been strong across many sectors with digital contractors in particularly high demand as well as marketing, finance and even some executive contractors.
3. Try before you buy
If you’re been working in the same role for a few years and are looking for a change, contracting can be a good option before transitioning to your next permanent position.
As a contractor you can gain exposure to a number of people, organisations and industries in a relatively short amount of time. This way you can try out a few different roles and companies to find out more about the culture of the organisations and whether it’s a good fit for you before committing to a full-time position.
Quite often we find that companies will offer successful contractors an option to go full time during or at the end of the contract – so if you are enjoying the position you can often stay on.
4. Work on interesting projects
Contractors are often brought in to organisations to tackle new and developing areas of the organisation. These projects not only look good on your CV but also provide for some really interesting and exciting areas of work that you may not otherwise get the opportunity to be involved in.
Whether it be strategic business challenges, emerging markets or technical projects, in a contract role you can often focus all your energy on getting one major project off the ground, be credited for your work and have an achievement to add to your resume.
5. Learn from and network with experts in your field
As a contractor you will often find yourself working and rubbing shoulders with some of the most talented and skilled people in your industry. Grouped together as part of a project team or with similar minded professionals, you can dive deep into a project. It’s often a brilliant way to really learn and develop your skills alongside other guns in your industry, an opportunity you may not have in a permanent position with a business as usual team.
This environment can be an amazing experience both on a professional and person level. Learning from experts and specialists in your area will not only boost your motivation but can be a great source of support and mentoring for current and future roles.
